The goal of electric bumper cars in most amusement parks is to bump into other bumper cars. To prevent damage and protect the driver of the bumper car, the manufacturer applied large rubber bumpers to the outside of the bumper car frame. These large bumpers can disperse the impact force, so that only the smallest vibration is transmitted to the car and its occupants.

The size of the electric bumper car arena and the design of the car itself limit the speed of the car to keep the inertia low. When two bumper cars collide, the large bumper cars absorb the force, but let the occupants feel the inertia change. This sudden shock provides a safe stimulus for the driver and passenger of the bumper car.

Electricity
Ceiling grid bumper cars rely on electricity to operate, which can be drawn from an elevated power supply or a built-in rechargeable gel battery. In the overhead power supply configuration, power is transmitted from the overhead power supply to the electric motor of the bumper car through a high rod installed at the rear of the bumper car. Just like driving, bumper cars ride on three or four wheels mounted on the bottom of the car. When the operator starts the motor by depressing the pedal, at least two wheels provide the driving force.

Driver
When the electric power feed pushes the electric motor of the bumper car forward or backward, the driver must maintain some degree of control over the direction of the vehicle. To accomplish this task, bumper car manufacturers have equipped each car with at least one steering wheel. When the driver turns the steering wheel, the connecting rod positions the steering wheel at an angle, which allows the car to turn when the driver applies forward or backward power. Depending on the model of the bumper car, the car may rely on two steering wheels installed on both sides of the underside of the car, or on a single steering wheel installed in the center of the car.

Seat Belt
Due to sudden and frequent vibrations, the amusement park managers usually require passengers in bumper cars to wear seat belts. Bumper car manufacturers usually install five-point seat belts similar to those used in professional racing cars instead of using standard three-point seat belts on road bikes. These padded seat belts can restrain the driver to prevent sudden inertial changes from being ejected onto the bumper racing track, and further absorb the impact of sudden changes in direction.
